Building a Theme Park for MakerFaire

UNIT 1 - BRAINSTORMING IDEAS

Build a mini theme park where guests will learn about the important issues our planet is facing and discover the hopeful possibilities that the future holds.

OUR THEME:

OUR GOAL:

BRAINSTORMING

Now we need to brainstorm ideas for our park!

But where do we start?

Brainstorm plan

CONCERNS

What important issues is our society and planet facing?

Grab a notebook or piece of paper and something to write with

ATTRACTION

What goes into making our Theme Park?

HOPES

What are some exciting possibilities and hopes do you have for the future?

STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 3

Let's generate ideas by focusing on 3 steps:

CONCERNS

What are you concerned about? What important issues is our planet facing?

STEP 1

Are you concerned about politics or the leaders of the world?

What important issues is our planet facing?

Do you have any concerns about technology?

Are your concerns global?

Are you worried about the health or safety of people?

Is everyone treated fairly?

Or are your concerns more specific to your home or neighborhood?

Does everyone have access to the same opportunities and rights?

What are YOU CONCERNED ABOUT?

Ideas to help you brainstorm:

Write down 2 of your concerns, like this...

COACH STEPHANIE's example CONCERNS

  •  Climate change is progressing too fast
  •  School isn't teaching me everything I want to learn

There are no wrong answers.

HOPES

What changes, technologies, or situations are you hopeful about for the future?

STEP 2

What hopes do you have for the planet and environment?

Can you imagine solutions to problems we are currently facing?

If you could create the perfect school what would it look like?

What do you wish existed that could help people everywhere?

If you could change one thing about the planet what would it be?

What is one thing about the world today you want to change and how would you change it?

Is there a technology you want to invent?

What are youR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE?

Ideas to help you brainstorm:

Are your hopes global or local?

Write down 2 of your hopes, like this...

COACH STEPHANIE's example HOPEs

  • In the future everyone will be truly equal and have equal opportunities
  • Technology that can feed everyone and no one goes hungry

There are no wrong answers.

Proceed to the next step

When you have 2 hopes and 2 concerns written down...

Did you know? Theme Parks are based around stories and storytelling

ATTRACTIONS

What will guests do in our park? What will they learn? What will their experience be?

STEP 3

We only have 3 months to build our theme park. That's a really short time to build anything!

Let's see some examples of attractions and exhibits we can build...

VIDEO GAMES +

VR EXPERIENCES

Example: Disney has a VR experience where you are a droid in the Star Wars world

Example: Harry Potter Wizarding World has a VR experience where you can fly your broom around Wizarding World

You can create a virtual reality movie or video game that guests can experience in full 360

Trivia Games

Show wait times for rides

Show guests a map of the park

Behind-the-scenes: Teach guests about how attractions were designed and built

Achievement Badges

could be functional:

Board Games

APPS

You can create a mobile or web app that helps guests navigate through the park and have more fun!

could be educational:

could be just for fun:

Quizzes based on exhibits

Scavenger Hunt Challenge

Role Playing Game

Performances usually have

  • Costumes
  • Music
  • Story/theme
  • Props

PERFORMANCES

You can create a stage-show, parade or street-performance to teach guests about your concerns or hopes for the future!

Games usually have goal

Games usually have a prize

Games usually have competition

PHYSICAL GAMES

You can create a physical game or activity to teach guests about your concerns or hopes for the future!

Costumes + Statues

Landmarks + Decorations

Posters, Signs + Graphics

SET DECORATIONS

You can decorate the environment so guests feel like they are walking around in the future!

Remember the 2 hopes and 2 concerns we wrote down?

Now it's your turn to brainstorm an idea for our theme park based on each one.

Create a video game or VR experience?

Build a set decoration?

Create a physical game?

Create a performance?

Build an App?

Make something else?

FOR YOUR CONCERNS + Hopes, DO YOU WANT TO:

Now pick the idea you are

MOST EXCITED ABOUT

and fill out your Looks-Like Works-Like activity from our first meeting
